Historia Apologetica de las Yndias Occidentales. Extracts : Valladolid, Spain, [ca. 1527-ca. 1560].

Also known as "Apologética historia sumaria cuanto a las cualidades, disposición, cielo y suelo de estas tierras, y condiciones naturales, policías, repúblicas, maneras de vivir e costumbres de las gentes de estas Indias occidentales y meridionales, cuyo imperio soberano pertenece á los Reyes de Castilla," and by variants of this longer title. First published in full in Madrid in 1909. These excerpts, made for Bancroft from a Ms. in the Library of Congress, deal with the lands, customs, and attributes of the American Indians. The work was originally intended for inclusion in the author's general history of the Indies and was designed to demonstrate the Indians' inherent capacity for assimilating Christian culture as free men.
